STUDIO 281 + WHITESPACE
Studio 281 has had humble beginnings, framing for countless artists, homes, galleries, museums and the many other facets of life, originally started by Leo Flavel, a graffitti artist from Maylands with deep roots in classic and the new developing arts. We have now expanded to Fremantle with our brand new exhibition space 'Whitepsace'
THE ART OF MEMEFARE
WHITESPACE GALLERY & STUDIOS
OPENING NIGHT OCTOBER 5TH 6PM
OCT 5TH - 21ST. 10AM - 4PM EVERYDAY
“IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT LOOKING, IT’S ABOUT SEEING.”
Artists have been engaged in the art of memefare since the earliest of times. From the tribal ceremony, church, monarchies and other political power groups, to corporate businesses and product advertising, the power of the arts to create and generate memes that replicate throughout a culture have been exploited to various ends.
The majority of art works that constitute paradigms of art historical record and the coda, were and are items that support these institutional information structures and voices.
In this show the unofficial voice, the challenge to predominant memes from the personal to the institutionalised, is seen as being a major motivation, both seriously and humorously. The work engaged by the participating artists suggests a movement away from the ironic, the relative and the cynical to a knowing attitude of challenge and reconsideration.
