WHITESPACE GALLERY & STUDIOS

https://www.facebook.com/events/461254570946955/

Join prolific WA artist Peter Usher as he celebrates his latest solo exhibition with us at our newly-launched gallery, WHITESPACE, in Fremantle.

β€˜Metaphor’ is Peter Usher's tenth solo show within a decade. This milestone mid-career retrospective showcases a large body of new work alongside an array of key paintings drawn from his formative artistic periods. β€˜Metaphor’ is an exhibition that connects multiple threads that run through Usher's career to date.

Known for capturing iconic landscapes in WA , Usher breathes life into his art through his creative use of paint and mediums.  With a passion and love for nature, Usher's art practice involves a delicate treatment of light and colour, playing with subtle shifts in hues that result in vivid, yet calm and luminous  landscapes.

Complimenting his refined brushwork, Usher often incorporates a sculptural aesthetic to his paint; the works can exude a palpable atmosphere that draws and holds the viewer with strength and depth.

With paintings that are visually beautiful and conceptually strong, Usher's artworks are a dialogue addressing his ongoing and deepening relationship to the natural environment within which he lives and works.

As one of WA's most established artists, Usher's art is at home in many prestigious collections around the world.

The exhibition will be Usher's first mid career retrospective and not only display a large body of new work, but an array of key paintings drawn from his formative artistic periods. Many of those works have never been previously exhibited.

This milestone event is Usher's 10th solo show within a decade and commemorates Studio 281's own growth and success with Whitespace. We will be delighted to have you join us.

β€œEncapsulating the beauty of the male form, Richard Matias is an accomplished photographer from Perth that has works in the Top 50 category for the Photographer of the year 2017 and have also been featured in publications for DNA magazine and swimwear companies like Marcuse- to name a few.

Showcasing handsome, sculpted models, Matias depicts the very essence of pristine male masculinity. Through his photographs, Matias captures the youthful resplendence of his subjects, preserving the natural, transient beauty they have.

Having established a strong following, and support from the LGBT community (?), Matias recently launched Liberated-  Perth's first book of male nude photography that supports the WA AIDS Council's Freedom Centre. Liberated will be available for purchase at Studio 281.

Liberated Print RMATIAS for CLIENT NHorgan (1 of 1).jpg

Matias' first solo exhibition with Studio 281 is a dialogue that embraces a liberation from societal and sexual norms as well as an expression of his own personal experiences and insights. The show will not only commemorate the legalisation of gay marriage in Australia but also puts forth support for the LGBT community.

Indulge in a visual retrospect that is beautiful, erotic and sensual for the official opening on the Saturday 14th July, 5:30pm.

The Rituals exhibition

The Rituals exhibition

The Rituals is an exhibition that explores sacred and personal forms of ritualism and the affects that these rituals have upon the human psyche as well as the physical body. The exhibition showcases the works of four multi-disciplinary West Australian artists - Circus Carnis, Marijke Loosjes, Matthew Pope and Frater Sorath.

Rituals are a key element in society, religion and cultural events. It is their obsessive and repetitive nature that scores the actions, gestures and words heavily into the self - this drives the need to perform them regardless of the positive or negative effects for the individual. This exhibition looks specifically at the impacts of rituals on the physical body and the psyche, showing how far they can be pushed before the thresholds break.

Artist duo Circus Carnis present the body as a piece of meat, a spectacle of the ritual, to be manipulated and the psychological and physical strengths tested. Using the body as an object Matthew Pope explores ritualised marking and the relationship with the materiality of the tools that scar. Marijke Loosjes presents the various stages of the grief-stricken mind and in a cathartic process dismantles it for the viewer. Through evocation Frater Sorath jars the psyche and transfers the audience to an altered state of consciousness.

The opening night is a ticketed event which will exhibit each artist presenting one off live performances that are extensions of the fixed works shown. The performances focus on the physical body as the subject matter, using it as as the medium.

Tickets for admission are $20+bf and available here
https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/the-rituals-exhibition-opening-night-tickets-36683591610

Exhibition opens at 6pm and runs till 9pm.
First live performance starts at 7pm.

The Rituals exhibition runs until the 9th September at the Ferguson Foundry, 281 Guildford Road, Maylands.
Gallery is open Monday to Friday 9-5pm and Saturday 10-4pm, admission on these days are free.

Jodee Knowles: That Kind of Silence That Draws Attention

After a two year hiatus, established artist Jodee Knowles is back to take you through an intimate and revealing journey via a solo exhibition at Studio 281's "Ferguson Foundry" exhibition space.

Subsequent to touring twice with Anthony Lister through Volcom and Underdogs Gallery, Knowles has created a body of work that reflects her personal experiences. The current oeuvre of work delves into her inner-reality, and explores the importance of compassion and empathy as part of the human condition. Knowles touches on issues such as self worth and the struggles that come with being kind in today's society. The series plays on a mixture of Knowle's own strength and weaknesses as an artist and a human being, and juxtaposes them to create a unique visual language that still feels familiar to her audience.

Knowles concurrently works on the Father Superior Project which involves having her favourite artists hand paint onto vintage jackets from her collection. The intention of this project is to create a collection of fashionable garments that are also works of art. Eco-friendly designer Estelle huijer, will be contributing to the project by reworking the jackets once the artworks are painted, and the finalised designs will be available for viewing during the exhibition.

Collectively, the show itself is intended to be more than stylised works of art, sculpture and fashion. Beneath the deceptively simple aesthetics, Knowles evokes in us, feelings, messages and narratives with her sophisticated use of gesture and symbolism.

Through this exhibition, Knowles plans to transform the exhibition space into a moment in time; a feeling you can’t shake, using her new collection of works. Studio 281 and Jodee Knowles will be jointly organising a preview of this new collection exclusively for VIP guests before the opening night.

The Daedalus Project is an ambitious multi-venue art event held across 4 Galleries (plus one symposium venue) over two weeks within the Lively Maylands cultural precinct. The exhibition showcases new and challenging work from 8 Hellenic-Australian artists all working with a broad range of technology enabled mediums through performance, robotics, Aerogel sculptures, sound installation, video, photography and textiles.

The theme of The Daedalus Project interweaves through a timeless concept, drawn from a symbiotic relationship between art, technology and science, that is often erroneously considered an exclusively modern concept. We also look into the cyclic nature of myth in its role in this relationship, while discovering that the body, and even identity, are used as memetic devices where such discourse is thought and fought over.

The name of the project itself comes from the myth of the first Greek sculpture and inventor Daedalus. Daedalus, who is better known for his invention of mechanical wings and the plight of his son Icarus, is symbolic of the symbiotic nature of art and technology prevalent in the ethos of Greek myth and culture.

The significance of such ideas to us β€˜moderns’ is analogous to the current reignited relationship between art and science; therefore, an investigation into the past may also reveal some insights into our future.

Daedalus was known for his creation of the Cretan maze, the flying apparatus he made for Icarus and himself, and a giant robot like sculpture called Talos, whose creation was also attributed to Hephestious, the god of art & technology.

β€œ His statues (were) like living beings: for they saw and walked, and, in every word, exercised every function so that his handiwork seemed to be a living being.”
Diodorus Siculus 49 BCE

This approach to art was passed on through Greek art from Polykleitos’ canon – an algorithm like formula for perfectly harmonious ratios in sculpture. Similar attention to this ethos was also placed on music by the Greek philosopher Pythagoras and his followers. Later during the Hellenistic period, artist/inventors such as Heron of Alexandria created robotic automatons that could pour you wine, play you a tune and even re-tell myths through a mechanical theatre no bigger than a small TV.

The Hellenic Δ’khōs initiative was founded by Petros Vouris in 2015. It is a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to inform and challenge predisposed ideas of Hellenic culture and art - beyond cultural clichΓ©s and racial caricatures. It sees culture as a constantly evolving entity that needs its artists and storytellers for its survival beyond the dusty shelves of antiquarian institutionalism. Hellenic Δ’khōs also sees culture as independent of borders and race and finds the legacy of a cross-cultural dialogue as principal to the advancement of Hellenic culture.

Hellenic Δ’khōs second event, The Daedalus Project presents works of wonder, leaving the viewer in awe as it weaves through themes of culture and identity, myth and reason, and the relationship between techne (craft/technology) and art. The significance of these ideas to us β€˜moderns’ is in the reignited relationship between art and science, which is now once again, urgently contemporary.

Garry Hyde Solo Exhibition: URBAN IMPACT

On Saturday, 7pm, 14th January, join us as we celebrate Perth abstract artist, Garry Hyde's solo exhibition at the Ferguson Foundry @Studio 281!

Garry Hyde is an abstract artist from Perth, WA. Moving from Esperance to Perth some years ago, the artist has found that living in an urban environment has had a great impact on his art practice. Time spent in the USA studying the work of the greats of abstract art, De Kooning, Rothko, Twombly and Basquiat inspired Hyde to paint in a style that will connect with, and move people to reflect on the world around them.

The substantial gestural paintings of Hyde are characteristic of a style that he has developed over a number of years, showcasing great colour, depth and vibrancy. Hyde's oeuvre of work reveal great thought and substance within his dynamic brushwork.

Hyde's larger-than-life paintings make for an impactful experience when viewed in the flesh within the vast space of the Ferguson Foundry. Come down an experience URBAN IMPACT for yourselves!
